Lava is now flowing dangerously close to the parking lot of the Blue Lagoon and is expected to cross it soon. However, authorities do not anticipate the lava breaching the defensive walls, reservoir, or the Svartsengi power plant.
Approximately 200 people have been evacuated from the Blue Lagoon as a precaution. Overnight and into the morning, heavy machinery has been deployed to fortify the defense walls at Bláalónsvegur Road and the parking lots near the lagoon. The gaps in these structures are being rapidly closed to mitigate the lava's advance.
Arnar Smári Þorvarðarson, a supervisor of the fortification efforts in Reykjanes, reported that the gap at Bláalónsvegur Road has already been sealed, and work is nearly complete on the remaining gap near the parking lot. He expressed confidence that the measures would prevent the lava from breaching the defenses.
Photos taken just before noon show the lava approaching the parking lot, with water visibly flowing from beneath the defense walls. When asked about the potential for steam explosions due to the interaction of lava and water, Þorvarðarson acknowledged the possibility but noted that, in most cases, the water rapidly evaporates into steam without causing major incidents.
Efforts to reinforce the defenses continue, with completion expected before the lava reaches critical areas. For now, the parking lot and surrounding infrastructure remain secure, but the situation is being closely monitored.
